In 2019, Mbah Kancil, 80 years old, agreed to act as one of the players in the film The Portrait of a Nightmare. When filming day arrived she seemed reluctant to play a role, while waiting for her friend to come to help the crew talk to her, she talked about her past as a Remong dancer as well as a comedian in a traditional Ludruk’s group when she travelled to Jakarta with Dagelan Pete’s group in the 60s. In 2023, after the pandemic, she is permanently moved from her nomadic lifestyle to a nursing home owned by the government, since she has lost most of her memories due to old age and has no known family to shelter her.
